Frequently Asked Questions
The following list is by no means exhaustive. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Is it really free?
Well, obviously nothing is free free. However, at no time will any hostee ever be asked to provide money for their hosting. In return, they must abide by slightly stricter guidelines than your average paid site. Ultimately, it's up to each individual as to whether they wish to take this offer up or not.
Why do you do this?
Back when I was at university, I had a reseller account I used to essentially let my domain pay for itself (plus a little bit of extra pocket-money). I never really expanded it past the bare minimum of covering my costs, since I didn't want the hassle of having a large quantity of paid hostees all requiring technical support and so forth.
When I started working, this system became unworkable for tax reasons, so I discontinued it. However, I still had my reseller account and the annual fee was not onerous enough to make me consider downgrading, since I run multiple domains myself and a reseller account is convenient for those.
I decided to keep the reseller account, and offer 'free' domain hosting to domains I considered to be of high-quality (or were run by friends... who are all high-quality, of course), mostly just because I could. That's all there is to it, really. Most private domains out there offer limited subdomain-based hosting; I just take that a little bit further and offer domain hosting as well.
Do you offer paid hosting?
No. As mentioned above, it's an old person tax thing.
What is 'shared' bandwidth/space?
Pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Domain hostees get their own quotas of bandwidth and disk space to do with what they will. Subdomain hostees, on the other hand, 'live' on the main void-star.net account and share the bandwidth and space from there. There aren't technically hard limits on space on an per-account basis, however in general any site using more than 50MB of disk space and 500MB of bandwidth will probably find themselves being scrutinised somewhat.
Help! I'm having problems with my [something]!
Let me know about it, and I'll see what I can do to fix it. This includes general script installation and set-up, as well as more serious, server-side issues. Note that since this isn't my job, I don't offer 24/7 tech support, but I'll try and get back to you as soon as I can.
Can I get more space/bandwidth/stuff?
Email me, explain what you want and why, and I'll see what I can do.
Do you register domain names?
Nope, I just host them. If you're looking for a cheap by reliable registrar, I've found GoDaddy is fairly good (just ignore all their upsell).
Can I install [script name]?
Yup, probably. Please note that I am a programmer by trade and there are a bunch of common personal domain-type scripts out there that I would not touch with an eleven foot pole. It is up to the individual site owner to keep the scripts on their website up-to-date and out of the hands of script kiddies and crackers.
